The book deals with the problems related to teaching the second   language to immigrant adults, with particular attention to the group of learners in weak or very weak schooling. The reference context is the Italian one, examined however in the light of significant international experiences. The notion of "functional literacy" and that of "linguistic need" constitute the organizing axes of the book: the first recalls the complexity inherent in defining illiteracy in advanced societies, the second   the individual paths of literacy.
