Abstract
This article focuses on the   inadequacy of the term ‘literacy’ which is often decontextualized of learning contexts, and on the inadequate teaching practices in migrant education. The   author argues that instructors need knowledge in linguistics, but also in   other disciplines to be able to teach migrants. More importantly, instructors have to be aware of the living and working conditions of migrants to be able   to understand their needs and teach them effectively.
Key words
Literacy, teaching   practices, language
Other interesting information
Language teachers need to   couple their pedagogic practices with theoretical knowledge; only then can   they respond adequately to the needs of migrants.
