AGM Recipe   Placemat Project
Release Date
2016
Director
Carly McCloskey
Plot Summary
As   part of the Art Gallery of Missisauga's community engagement programming, a   series of four workshops were held in October and November 2016, with   Community Partner Catholic Crosscultural Services (CCS) and Lead Artist   Marianne Alas. Over 85 newcomer students in the CCS Language Instruction for   Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program in Mississauga participated! The hands-on   workshops revolve around themes of legacy, history, ancestry and memory   associated with food; meals shared with family and cherished recipes passed down from one generation to the next. This project highlights the ritual of   cooking dishes and the tastes and smells that bring back many memories and   associations. Collecting favourite recipes from new community members is a   great way to explore memories and storytelling through food that brings   people together and connects a community. The recipes which have lovingly   evolved into artworks by the project participants will be on display at the   Glass Pavilion in Mississauga Celebration Square on December 16, 2016 and   many newcomer families will be in attendance.
